On Saturday, November 17th, 2007, the Huber Heights Public Safety Communications Center was awarded full International Accreditation by a unanimous vote of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Communications Center provides full service public safety dispatching for the Huber Heights Police and Fire Divisions as well as being the primary Public Safety Answering Point and 9-1-1 center for the area. This award of accreditation comes after months of preparation and assessment of performance as measured against 216 standards set by CALEA which reflect the best professional requirements and practices for a public safety communications agency.
In August 2007, an assessment team assigned by CALEA visited the Huber Heights Public Safety Communications Center to conduct an onsite assessment. The assessment requires the team to closely examine the performance and practices of the Communications Center in regard to compliance with the established CALEA standards. The results of the onsite review by the assessment team concluded the Huber Heights Public Safety Communications Center was in compliance with 100% of applicable standards. The team reported, “The Center provides a high level of professional services to the citizens they serve.” In addition, the assessment team stated, “Huber Heights has recognized the value of having hometown service and the safety of a highly trained and dedicated public safety force.”
After conclusion of the onsite assessment, the team recommended to the CALEA Commissioners full accredited status. During the review of the Huber Heights Public Safety Communications Center by the CALEA Commission in Colorado Springs, there were no issues or concerns in the onsite team’s recommendations. In fact, Chairman Robert Greenlaw of the Review Commission stated the report reflected a high level of compliance and performance and that Huber Heights Communication Center was “doing things right”. The review Commission commended the level of performance being provided to the community of Huber Heights and voted unanimously in favor of accreditation.
With the successful award of International Accreditation, this makes the Huber Heights Public Safety Communications Center one of only 53 accredited centers in the world and the first accredited communications center in the State of Ohio. In addition, Huber Heights is the first and only City in the State of Ohio to have dual international accreditation for both law enforcement and communications, proving the City’s commitment to provide professional service confirmed and measured by a set of internationally adopted performance standards.
